CORE SYSTEM CONTROL
What Does a Consumer Unit Do?
consumer unit A is the main control and protection point for many electrical installations. It distributes electricity to individual circuits such as lighting, sockets, kitchen equipment, showers and outdoor supplies, while allowing circuits to be isolated and protected by suitable devices.
Protective devices such as MCBs, RCDs, RCBOs and surge protection devices may be used depending on the installation design. MCBs respond to overloads or short circuits, while RCDs and RCBOs can provide additional protection against certain electric shock risks.
Whether a consumer unit should be repaired or replaced depends on its condition, age, circuit layout, protective devices, available capacity, test results and the type of work required. Some issues may be resolved by repair, while others may require a full replacement or further investigation.
