What Was the Great British Insulation Scheme?

The Great British Insulation Scheme was a UK government energy efficiency scheme designed to help improve insulation in some of the least energy-efficient homes in Great Britain. The scheme supported eligible households with certain insulation measures before it officially ended on 31 March 2026.

New GBIS applications are no longer available. However, households may still be able to explore other support routes such as ECO4, Warm Homes-related support or private insulation services, subject to eligibility, property suitability, survey findings and funding availability.

GBIS SCHEME BACKGROUND

Why Insulation Support Matters for UK Homes

Many older UK homes can lose heat through poorly insulated walls, roofs, floors or building fabric. Suitable insulation can help reduce heat loss and improve comfort when specified and installed correctly.

Insulation measures may help to:

The right insulation measure can support comfort, energy performance and longer-term property improvement, subject to property suitability.

Benefits of Suitable Insulation Measures

GBIS previously supported subsidised insulation for eligible households. Similar insulation measures may help improve comfort and energy performance where the property is suitable and the measure is installed correctly.

41
POTENTIAL BILL SAVINGS

Suitable insulation can help reduce heat loss, with potential heating cost savings depending on property condition, energy tariffs, occupancy and usage.

44
ENERGY PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT

Insulation may help reduce energy demand where suitable, with any emissions impact depending on the property, heating system, energy source, installation quality and usage.

43
FUNDING MAY BE AVAILABLE

GBIS has ended, but some households may qualify for other current support routes. Funding depends on eligibility, property suitability, scheme criteria, survey findings and funding availability.

42
IMPROVED WARMTH & COMFORT

Measures such as cavity wall insulation or loft insulation can help improve warmth and reduce draughts or cold spots where the property is suitable. Damp and condensation risks must be assessed before installation.

ENERGY PERFORMANCE IMPACT

How Insulation Can Support Energy Performance

Suitable insulation can help reduce heat loss, meaning some homes may need less energy to maintain comfortable temperatures. Any impact on energy use, costs or emissions depends on the property, heating system, insulation measure, installation quality and how the home is used.

Insulation programmes can contribute to wider energy efficiency objectives, but results vary by measure type, property condition and delivery quality. Claims about carbon reduction or national impact should be supported by scheme data or official evidence.

Beyond the Initial Enquiry:
