Heating Technologies That May Be Eligible Under BUS

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme may support eligible low-carbon heating technologies where the property, installer, technology and installation design meet the scheme requirements:

  • Air Source Heat Pumps: May be eligible where the property, existing heating system, system design and installer route meet BUS requirements.
  • Ground Source Heat Pumps: May be eligible where ground loop arrangements, property suitability and installation design meet the relevant scheme and technical requirements.
  • Water Source Heat Pumps: May be eligible as part of the ground source heat pump category where the water source, system design and property requirements are suitable.
  • Biomass Boilers: May be eligible in limited cases, normally for rural properties off the gas grid, subject to scheme rules, emissions requirements, fuel type and property suitability.

These technologies may support lower-carbon heating where suitable, but running costs, emissions impact and performance depend on the property, system design, energy tariffs, installation quality and usage.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant scheme for eligible property owners in England and Wales.
