What Is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant scheme for eligible property owners in England and Wales. It helps with part of the cost of replacing fossil fuel heating systems with eligible low-carbon heating systems, such as heat pumps or biomass boilers.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is installer-led. A suitable MCS-certified installer applies for the grant on behalf of the property owner through Ofgem, where the property and installation meet the scheme requirements. The grant value is deducted from the amount the customer pays, and final costs depend on the quote, property requirements, system design and any additional works needed.

HSSE Solutions can help homeowners, landlords and eligible property owners understand Boiler Upgrade Scheme requirements, review possible next steps and connect the enquiry with a suitable installation route where applicable. Final eligibility, grant approval, installation scope and costs depend on the property, installer assessment, scheme rules and Ofgem approval.

ELIGIBLE HEATING OPTIONS

Heating Technologies That May Be Eligible Under BUS

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme may support eligible low-carbon heating technologies where the property, installer, technology and installation design meet the scheme requirements:

These technologies may support lower-carbon heating where suitable, but running costs, emissions impact and performance depend on the property, system design, energy tariffs, installation quality and usage.

Benefits of Boiler Installation

Possible Benefits of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme

Eligible BUS-supported installations may offer several benefits, depending on the property, system design, installation quality, energy tariffs and usage:

54
Potential Running Cost Changes

Running costs may increase or decrease depending on the existing heating system, property insulation, system design, controls, energy tariffs, occupancy and usage.

55
Emissions Impact

Eligible low-carbon heating systems may reduce emissions compared with fossil-fuel heating, depending on system design, electricity source, fuel type, property condition and usage.

56
Potential EPC or Asset Improvement

Some heating upgrades may support EPC or asset improvement objectives where reflected in updated assessments. Property value or saleability is not guaranteed.

57
Grant Support

BUS grant support may reduce the upfront cost of eligible heat pump or biomass boiler installations, but customer contribution may still be required.

BUS ELIGIBILITY EXCLUSIONS

What BUS Does Not Cover

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme should not be promoted as a standard gas boiler grant. It supports eligible low-carbon heating technologies such as heat pumps and biomass boilers. Standard gas boiler replacement should be handled through a private boiler installation service page.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant scheme for eligible property owners in England and Wales. It can help cover part of the cost of replacing a fossil-fuel heating system with an eligible heat pump or biomass boiler. The scheme is installer-led and subject to property eligibility, installer assessment, scheme rules and Ofgem approval.

Property owners may be eligible if they own the property and are replacing an eligible fossil-fuel or electric heating system. Eligibility depends on the property, existing heating system, technology type, installer assessment and scheme rules. Some properties, including most new builds and social housing, are not eligible under GOV.UK guidance.

Current guidance lists grant support for eligible air source heat pumps, ground or water source heat pumps, biomass boilers and air-to-air heat pumps. Hybrid heat pump systems are not eligible under GOV.UK guidance.

The scheme is installer-led. A suitable MCS-certified installer normally applies for the grant on behalf of the property owner through Ofgem after property suitability and quotation details are checked.

Rental properties may be eligible where the property owner applies and the property and proposed installation meet BUS requirements. Eligibility is not automatic and depends on ownership, existing heating system, technology type, installer assessment and scheme rules.

Important Scheme Information

Please note: Boiler Upgrade Scheme grants are subject to property ownership, existing heating system, technology type, installer assessment, MCS requirements, scheme criteria, Ofgem approval and grant availability. Not all applicants, properties or technologies will qualify. Any costs not covered by the grant will be quoted privately before work proceeds.

Potential savings, comfort improvements, emissions reductions, EPC changes and energy performance improvements vary depending on property condition, existing systems, selected technology, system design, installation quality, energy tariffs, occupancy and usage.
