What Is an EICR, and Why Do You Need One?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR) is a formal inspection of a property’s fixed wiring and electrical systems to assess their safety, condition, and compliance with current standards. It focuses on consumer units, earthing and bonding, circuits, sockets, lighting, and other permanently connected equipment, checking for deterioration, damage, or unsafe alterations.
An EICR is needed to identify risks that may not be obvious in everyday use, such as overheating connections, inadequate protective devices, missing earthing, or insulation breakdown. The report categorises findings by severity, distinguishing immediate dangers from issues that require improvement.
It also records test results, observed defects, and recommended remedial work, providing a clear basis for prioritising repairs. By documenting the installation's condition at a point in time, an EICR supports safer operation, reduces the risk of electric shock or fire, and helps maintain the reliability of circuits and connected appliances.
